Confidential counselling in a warm and empathetic atmosphere

Shantraj has 26 years of experience in working with people as a teacher, lecturer, dean and counsellor. He is a NZAC provisionally registered Counsellor and is passionate about the difference counselling can make in peoples' lives. He aims to offer individual and relationship therapy to help to achieve a rich and satisfying life, even in the face of some of life's most challenging circumstances. Counselling is a very personal experience, thus he tailors the modalities used to suit each person's needs and unique set of circumstances.

Life throws many surprises at us. While we cannot predict the outcome of any situation, we can take control of how we respond to those situations. With my Counselling sessions, you’ll learn about acceptance and how to exert your freedom of choice over whatever life may throw at you.

I offer various modalities of counselling to suit your needs, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Embodiment CBT and Narrative Therapy. Slow-paced diaphragmatic breathing reduces anxiety, depression and panic attacks. I also offer breathing exercises to increase rest and relaxation.

Relationships are like a dance. Our most important relationships can trigger strong feelings and can be source of immense stress and pain, as well as great comfort and happiness.

Couple's therapy helps you understand your and your partner’s needs as well as helping you to learn to respond to each other’s needs. In Couple's therapy you learn about each other’s relationship dance moves and emotional responses to these moves. Couple's therapy helps you to identify the moves that are hurting you or your partner and to develop a strategy to change the moves to come closer together and enjoy the relationship. That will help you to build a secure and lasting bond within your relationship, creating closeness, trust and connection.

I also provide feedback sessions on PREPARE/ENRICH couple assessment. This assessment is completed online and identifies a couple's strength and growth areas, with customized versions of the inventory used for couples, pre-marital counselling, marriage counselling, marriage enrichment, and dating couples considering engagement. Based on a couple's assessment, this results in 4-8 feedback sessions which will help the couple to discuss and understand their results to improve relationship skills.

Cross Cultural

My experience of living in New Zealand and overseas has enriched my knowledge of a variety of cultures.  I have an understanding of both Western and Eastern cultures which helps me to relate to individuals from various backgrounds. I provide counselling for individuals and couples of all age groups and ethnicities.  I also can facilitate group therapeutic programmes.

Student and Immigrants

Having been an immigrant myself and a tertiary student in a foreign country, I understand the stresses students go through.  People displaced for various reasons, such as leaving home for study and immigration, can suffer from displacement grief and anxiety. I provide counseling for displacement grief and anxiety. I also work with individuals to develop resilience, general wellness, on-line wellness, time management and self-management as well as dealing with exam stress.
